Guglielmo Marconi achieved the first transatlantic wireless telegraphy signal in December 1901, transmitting Morse-code 'S' from Cornwall, England to Newfoundland, Canada. His commercial ventures rapidly made ship-to-shore communication a reality, and the world suddenly felt much smaller.
